Bari Airport Information

Bari Karol Wojtyla Airport serves the city of Bari in the southwest of Italy. Originally a military airfield bought in the 1930s, it has been operating civil flights since the 1960s and was extended in 1990 for the Football World Cup. A new terminal and multi-storey car park was completed in 2005, and the airport now handles 4 million passengers a year who come to enjoy lovely Bari and Italy’s Adriatic coast.
The terminal building has a departures area on the ground floor, arrivals on the first floor and a waiting area on the second. Lost passengers can consult the information desk on the departures level, and the spiritually lost can visit the chapel in the arrivals area. Retail therapy is widely available with stores ranging from a tobacco kiosk to a duty free outlet, and there are also numerous eateries. The terminal is a free WiFi zone, and for local information there are Totem Web Points with touch screens offering airport details in several languages and tourism info.
Lots of airlines operate at Bari Airport, including of course Italy’s flag-carrier Alitalia  with domestic flights to Milan, Rome and Turin. Other European lines fly to EU destinations, including low-cost carriers such as Ryanair, EasyJet, Wizz Air and Volotea. Mistral Air and Volotea have some beautiful Greek island destinations departing Bari, and British Airways runs a route to London Gatwick.
AS with any airport, departing passengers must pass security controls before boarding. This means checking both people and carry-on luggage for potential weapons. Passengers arriving from EU countries need only a valid EU Identity Card, but non-European visitors require a passport and will pass through passport control.
From downtown Bari to the airport is only 12 kilometres, so it is easy to get to by taxi, rental car or public transport- there are several bus services between the airport and Bari. The city is the capital of Italy’s Apulia region, and a busy ferry port for Eastern Mediterranean destinations. Bari Vecchia is the Old Town and a beautiful medieval area with some stunning churches. With beaches as well, Bari makes an amazing holiday destination!
